After 4 movies, how much is there really left to say about the Scary Movie franchise? While it can be argued that this quadrilogy (is that a word?) has had some good entries and some poor, they have all managed to remain consistent in what they bring to the table. With Scary Movie 4, you get exactly what youâ??ve come to expect; toilet humor, prop jokes, and an all out assault on basically every horror and action movie to hit the big screen since the last Scary Movie.
So, how does Scary Movie 4 stack up when compared to its three predecessors? In my opinion, Scary Movie 4 is the worst in the franchise. As Iâ??m sure you already know, the movie relies heavily on jokes made at the expense of other films and it really lives or dies on the assumption that people will recognize the film being spoofed. Unfortunately, in the 3 years since the last Scary Movie, the pickings have been rather slim. The most recent year, 2005, was one of the worst years in cinema history, with movie goers staying away in droves. This left the selection of jokes rather limited, and ultimately led to the use of several movies that the movie going public had already pushed out of their memory long ago.
Take for example, The Village. This movie was horrendous in the theatre. In fact, Iâ??m almost positive that 10 minutes after watching the movie, it was forever washed away from my memory. Scary Movie 4 devotes quite a substantial portion of the screen time to spoofing The Village, but the problem is, if people donâ??t remember the original movie, many of the jokes fall flat.
This is not to say that Scary Movie 4 doesnâ??t have its funny points. As with the previous films, as long as youâ??re not offended by **** and fart jokes or seeing little kids get thrown around like bags of potatoes, then at some point youâ??ll find something to laugh about. When done right, some of the jokes are really funny. The big problem with Scary Movie 4 is that they are just too few and far between.
